How to Take the Doors off a Jeep Wrangler | Perkins Motors
The new Jeep Wrangler is an unmistakable SUV. Whether you see an older model on Pueblo roads or a newer example driving around Castle Rock, it’s hard to confuse the Wrangler with anything else. That’s especially true if you see a Wrangler driving around without doors! After all, with the notable exception of the Ford Bronco, there are very few vehicles that currently allow you to remove the doors! There’s really nothing like driving around the road without doors on your Jeep, other than perhaps driving around with the top off. How To Take the Doors Off Your Jeep
First thing’s first when taking the doors off your Jeep Wrangler: you’ll need to fold your mirror and roll down your windows. After that, do the following:
- Disconnect any power cables by removing the footwell under your dashboard or by the b-pillar. This should pop off by removing the clip that attaches it.
- Disconnect the door straps by lifting them off their respective hooks.
- Unbolt the doors from the door hinges and then gently slide the doors up and away. They will be heavy! You may wish to have two people lift up the doors.
- Repeat these steps for each door on your Wrangler.
- Don’t forget to disable the door alarm on your Wrangler by detaching the negative lead from the battery and putting it aside, away from the terminal. Next, remove the fuse box cover and look at the diagram of the fuses on its underside. Once you locate the “Door Jam Defeat” fuse, remove it with fuse clips or needle-nose pliers. Afterwards, reconnect the negative lead to the battery.

How to Take the Top Off Your Jeep
If you’re taking the doors off your Jeep, you might as well go full monte and take the top off your Jeep too! Doing so provides a genuinely thrilling experience! Some Jeep purists prefer to take the top off as opposed to the doors if they have to choose between one or the other.
That having been said, even die-hard Jeep experts will tell you that, tempting as it may be to try it on your own, you’re most likely better off entrusting a certified Jeep service department like ours to remove your Jeep’s top. When you attempt to remove it on your own, you risk permanently damaging the top because it’s more difficult and awkward — not to mention heavy — to maneuver than the doors. Plus, on older or vintage Wrangler models the process for removing the top is not nearly as simple as it is with newer Jeep tops that are designed to come off one piece at a time. Often, the process involves removing several small bolts.
