The Dodge brothers were producing vehicles way back in the early 1900s, but their trucks came into vogue around 1914. The Dodge RAM pickup truck, meanwhile, was introduced in 1980 for model year 1981; there was also the Ramcharger SUV and Dodge RAM van. The RAM truck continued to bear the Dodge name until RAM and Dodge split in 2009, at which point in time, RAM became its own marque. While both Dodge and RAM are currently owned by Stellantis (formerly known as FCA group), they are their own unique automotive brands, not unlike how GMC and Chevy are their own unique brands under the General Motors umbrella. Chrysler acquired Dodge in 1981 and kept their most popular models, including RAM pickup trucks. From 1981 to 2009, their pickup trucks were named “Dodge RAM,”. After 2009, RAM trucks became its own brand.
In 2009, Dodge’s parent company, Chrysler, decided to make RAM a standalone marque. But both Dodge and RAM are owned by the Chrysler group, which is itself a subsidiary of Stellantis.
Dodge & RAM splitting in 2009 allowed each to develop their own brand identities, with RAM focusing on delivering highly-capable trucks with plenty of premium features, and Dodge focusing on delivering performance-oriented muscle cars & SUVs.
